Common Ground, Real Change: A Better Bay County

Published on 21 September 2024 at 18:25

Bay County is a special place. We’re blessed with beautiful coastlines, rich history, and hardworking people who deeply care about their communities. But like anywhere else, we face challenges—rising crime, growing poverty, education gaps, and economic instability. The problems are real, but the solutions we’ve often been presented with are the same old tired ideas that rarely work in the long run: turning to the government. Yet, history and experience have shown us something important—government, while necessary in its proper role, is often inefficient and ineffective at solving problems outside of securing our rights.

Think about it. The more we rely on the heavy hand of government to solve local problems, the more we lose sight of the fact that, more often than not, the solutions to these problems exist within our own communities. Business owners, educators, non-profit leaders, faith-based organizations, and neighborhood groups—these are the key players when it comes to driving real, sustainable change. They know the pulse of our neighborhoods, they understand the unique needs of their communities, and they have the creativity, flexibility, and commitment to make long-lasting improvements.

But here’s the catch: this only works when we come together, when we unite behind a shared vision for a thriving and prosperous Bay County. We need to move beyond the divisiveness of political bickering and ideological battles that do nothing but waste our time and energy. I don’t care about where we disagree. Honestly, I have zero interest in fighting or arguing over things we can’t change. My only interest, and what I think should be all of our focus, is finding common ground, understanding where we do agree, and working together to find solutions that can bring real, positive change to our county.

Let’s take a moment to imagine what that vision could look like. Imagine a Bay County where businesses thrive because we’ve fostered an environment that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship. Where the economy grows because local business leaders, educators, and the community come together to provide the resources and mentorship that small businesses need to succeed. Where young people stay, not because they can’t find a way out, but because there are real opportunities to build a future here.

Or think about our schools—what if, instead of waiting for the government to fix the educational system, we stepped up as a community? What if local businesses partnered with schools to provide internships, mentorship programs, and hands-on learning experiences? What if parents, teachers, and community leaders came together to advocate for educational policies that make sense for our children, instead of relying on top-down mandates that don’t?

And when it comes to tackling crime or poverty, let’s be real—government programs, while well-intentioned, rarely provide the long-term solutions we need. But our local faith-based organizations, non-profits, and community groups? They are on the ground every day, working tirelessly to provide support, resources, and mentorship. These are the institutions that create lasting change, not bureaucratic agencies that are out of touch with the realities on the ground.

The bottom line is this: the most effective, enduring solutions come from the ground up, not the top down. When we take ownership of the issues impacting our neighborhoods and communities, when we get engaged, and when we work together, we’re capable of incredible things.

So what do you say, Bay County? Are you ready to start looking at things differently? Are you ready to find the areas where we agree and roll up our sleeves to make a difference together?

Because I am. I’m tired of waiting on government. I’m tired of the same old debates that never seem to get us anywhere. What excites me is the potential we have right here, within our own community, to create the change we want to see. It starts with you and me. It starts with us choosing to focus on where we can agree, on what we can accomplish together, rather than where we disagree.

So, let’s stop wasting time with arguments that divide us. Let’s build a better Bay County—together. And when we do, I truly believe we’ll create something stronger, more resilient, and more prosperous than any government solution could ever deliver.

Are you with me? Let’s get to work.
